About This Project

WHEN: ONE ARCHITECTURE WEEK 2015

“Madrid Playa” was a visiting photographic exhibition of Roberto Villalón Vara, who took the pictures in the summer of 2011 along the banks of the Manzanares River, a few months after the completion of a park – 6 km in length, situated along the river. Madrid Río major initiative was launched in 2005 and completed in 2011. It was designed by three local studios in collaboration with Netherlands-based practice West 8. Here is the project in a nutshell: the banks of the river were cleaned, the M30 motorway – relocated underground, with the roads converted into a linear park with various zones, promenades for cyclists and pedestrians, sports facilities, recreation and entertainment attractions, and an artificial beach. All this a kilometer away from downtown Madrid.
