The exhibition shows the historical atlases of 24 Irish towns that are part of the large European Irish Historic Towns Atlas research project. The atlases trace the topographical development of certain small and big cities through a series of maps and detailed texts. The Irish Historic Towns Atlas project was launched in 1981 under the umbrella of the Royal Irish Academy and the International Commission for the History of Towns, which began to make atlases of old European cities as early as 1955 as a gesture of reconciliation after WWII.
Nowadays in Ireland there are 27 atlases that show 24 towns
